Fostering to Inspire are committed to providing high quality training opportunities to our foster carers. We understand and recognise that building the skills and knowledge of our carer group means our fostered children receive an excellent standard of care.
During the assessment process, you will get the opportunity to attend our 3-day preparatory course, Skills to Foster™. This course includes:
- What Foster Carers Do
- Understanding and Caring for Children Looked After
- Promoting Identity and Life Chances
- Understanding and Managing Behaviour
- Safer Caring
- Supporting Transitions
During this course we also offer an opportunity for sons and daughters of foster carers to learn about the fostering task and how they will be involved.
The attendance at training will be an expectation and we ensure our training is relevant and imperative to the fostering task. You will be provided with a training calendar each year and a personal development plan that will aid your training development.
Our training programme includes the highly acclaimed Signs of Safety which ensures we work in the best possible way to support our children and young people in their foster placements. We additionally ensure our carers are skilled in de-escalation and therapeutic techniques by attending Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Families training following approval.
Other courses offered include:
- First Aid
- Safeguarding & Child Protection
- Child Sexual Exploitation
- Caring for the Sexually Abused Child
- Understanding the importance of Attachment
Training, Support and Development Standards (TSDS):
All foster carers in the UK are required to complete the TSDS portfolio within their first year of fostering. The portfolio is an opportunity for foster carers to share experiences and demonstrate their suitability to foster to a high standard. Your Supervising Social Worker will guide you through the TSDS and offer support where necessary.
